Many of us look forward to retreating to our homes after a busy day at work or a long week. Our homes should be special, unique places that make us feel relaxed and secure. Having a soothing, relaxing home environment is incredibly beneficial for mental health and well-being. If you’re looking to turn your house into a haven of tranquility, here are some tips to create serene spaces at home.

Soothing Colors

Colors have a powerful influence on the look of our living spaces, but they can also affect the ambiance and feel of the room. If you’re decorating quiet zones, such as bedrooms, snugs and studios for yoga or painting, for example, opt for soothing shades. Try to avoid bright, bold colors and clashing prints and patterns and choose colors that make you feel relaxed and calm. Neutrals, shades of blue, purple and green and pastels are excellent choices.

Scents and Aromas

The smell of a room can stimulate or relax us, making us feel calmer or more energized. There are all kinds of products you can use to add scents and aromas to bedrooms, living rooms and bathrooms. Examples include diffusers, scented candles, room and sleep sprays and burning incense like Bolivian Rock. Choose scents that have relaxing properties, such as lavender, chamomile, bergamot, sandalwood, vanilla and cedar. Room sprays, candles and incense can add gorgeous smells to the room as well as creating more inviting, homely spaces.

Soft Furnishings

Nothing makes a room more cozy and welcoming than soft furnishings. Scattering cushions on couches and throws and blankets on beds can transform even the most clinical space into a cozy spot to wind down and recharge your batteries in an instant. Use curtains, rugs, cushions, blankets and throws to add warmth and mix and match textures. In the winter, it’s a fantastic idea to choose heavier, more indulgent fabrics, such as velvet, wool and faux fur. When it gets warmer, you can swap to linen, cotton and silk.

Ambient Lighting

Bright lights make us feel more energetic and alert while soft lighting helps us to unwind and de-stress. Add ambient lighting to peaceful areas in your home. Use wall lights, standing lamps or string lights instead of central pendant lamps or strip lights, or fit a dimmer switch. You can turn the lights up or down depending on the mood you want to create. Take inspiration from places you’ve been, such as hotels and restaurants, and browse products before you decide what to buy. There’s a wide range of styles of lights and lamps to match different interior trends and tastes.

Our homes are multifunctional spaces, which provide a base for sleeping, socializing, working and spending quality time with family and friends. It’s important to balance active pursuits, work and hanging out with others with peace and tranquility. Create serene spaces that help you to unwind and feel relaxed, and set aside zones for activities that make you feel calmer, such as reading, watching TV or listening to music. Adding soft furnishings and ambient lighting, choosing soothing colors, and using scented candles, diffusers and incense can help to turn your home into a restful retreat.
